Embarking on a Cosmic Journey: Our Residency with the SETI Institute

Non Random Arts Collective x SETI Institute

We are thrilled to announce that the Non Random Arts Collective has embarked on a new and exciting journey—a two-year artist residency with the SETI Institute, beginning in July 2024. This opportunity marks a significant milestone in our collective’s exploration of the intersections between art, science, and the vast unknowns of the universe

Why SETI ?

The SETI Institute, renowned for its pioneering research in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, offers a unique environment where cutting-edge science meets the limitless possibilities of creative expression. For us, the decision to collaborate with SETI was driven by a shared curiosity about the unknown and a desire to explore the profound questions that arise when we look beyond our planet.

Starting a Two-Year Exploration as Artists in Residence

The Artist in Residence programme (AiR) is a fantastic opportunity for arts-science collaborations and we are thrilled to be invited onto it to share out work and our processes as we continue cross disciplinary conversations around the future of our planet and beyond.

Over the next two years, we will be working closely with SETI’s researchers, astronomers, and scientists, developing multiple projects that bridge the gap between the arts and sciences. Our goal is to engage with the diverse minds at SETI, using our interdisciplinary approach to explore themes of identity modification, deep time, communication, and the future of species in extreme climates.

We anticipate that this residency will not only push the boundaries of our creative practice but also contribute new perspectives to the scientific conversations happening at SETI. By integrating artistic inquiry with scientific research, we hope to challenge conventional thinking and open up new avenues of understanding.

We begin our residency with a whole collective residency in mountain view, California. For some of us, this will be the first time we have met in person in over a year

Workshops, conversations and explorations

Our previous project, GAIA, delved into the ethical implications of genetic editing for climate adaptation, posing questions about the future of human and non-human species in extreme environments. At SETI, we see an opportunity to take these ideas even further—considering how life might adapt to the harsh conditions of other planets, how communication might evolve across species and worlds, and what it truly means to seek out intelligent life in the cosmos.

What Lies Ahead?

As we begin this journey, we are eager to immerse ourselves in the collaborative process, learning from the incredible work being done at SETI while contributing our own insights and creativity. Our time at the SETI Institute will be documented through a series of blog posts, where we will share our experiences, the projects we develop, and the insights we gain along the way.

We look forward to the unexpected discoveries that this residency will bring, and we are excited to share this journey with you as we explore the cosmos through the lens of both art and science.

Stay tuned for updates as we embark on this cosmic adventure!
